This video is the style that our group would like to use, it has the dark edgy look that we would like to apply in our music video. The beginning is eery and uncomfortable to watch the music doesn't begin straight away. There are cuts made of different shots of Rihanna, there areclose ups used to establish the artist. Once the music begins there are over lapped shots from different scenes of Rihanna or people dressed in old clothing.
The costume for the video is dark colours mainly black they are stylish and sexy which appeals to male audiences as Rihanna is known for her very exposed outfits. When the chorus kicks in, a new scene is shown of dancing the editing has been made sharp and fast to distort the movements and intensify the weird of the video. The lyrics and visuals aren't really connected in the video it doesn't state the obvious unlike other video where they would have a clip and the lyrics matching, in this video however either we have shots of Rihanna singning them or shots of weird dancers. The video doesn't focus on men and it only shows minor shots of them throughout, this goes against the stereotype of pop videos were good looking girls or boys are shown with the artist as the 'love interest.'

The are moments when the music and visuals match. On certain beats there are parts where we see a guard hitting a drum or Rihanna patting someone of the head. Or if the music jumped or jumbled up then the video had been editing to jump along with the song.

This video did bring a new side of Rihanna's style. Here we see her 'Good Girl gone Bad" taken to another step along with her other more sinister videos Russian Roulette, Wait your turn and Hard. These videos were seen as a response to her personal life and relationship with Chris Brown, were it hit the media about there abusive relationship. The songs from her albums that were released shortly after their split caused a stirred in the press where this was used to make a higher profile of the release with Rihanna's music.

The X factor 'Machine'

The X factor is a singing talent show where 4 judges narrow down a search for the years winner of the show. In the X Factor I would like to see a new genre of talent and someone who couple fill a gap in the industry today and start a new era to music of our generation. (Person opinion)
We watched 12 clips of the most memorable and popular audition tapes. The contestants :

Janet Devlin 16 -
Frankie Cocozza
Goldie Cheung
2 Shoes
The Keys
Jade Richards
Luke Lucas
Craig Colton
Amelia Lily
John Wilding
Terry Winstanley
Misha Bryan

Things we had to look out when watching these acts were their look, what genre would they fit in, can they do anything else and would they bring in a christmas number one?

The X Factor Machine

Adorno and Horkheimer argued that the 'culture industry'' operated in the same way as others manufacturing industries. All work had beco
me the formalized and products were according to rationalized organizational procedures that were established for the sole purpose of making money.

For Example JLS.

Before

After

Watching the first clip and then the second, we can clearly see how the the machine has changed JLS into a product themselves grooming them into a fitted category into the music industry.

Even though they didn't win X Factor the carefully marketing system of producing products them would appeal to their
target audience, young teenagers to young adults per say.

This is the first music video that JLS released after X Factor and the machine that changed them.

The culture Industry

The culture industry concept is a thesis proposed by Adorno and Horkheimer of the Frank
furt school. The modern view of mass culture is that there is a single marketplace in which the best of most popular works succeed.X Factor is a prime example of the cult industry which the public seem to thrive on. This all refers to the various businesses that produce, distribute, market or sell products that belong categorically in creative arts which the record company Syco records uses for the winners of X factor to be signed becoming a huge part of the cult industry.

Journal

Today my group and I picked our brief. We decided to a girl band as we are all girls and have a very wide range of skills and styles.
We have a rough idea of what type of group we want for our video and the plan is to go against the stereotypical girl band group that is cheesy and all girly.

You have been asked to devise and make a promotional music video for the new act detailed below. As a new act, the record label is keen that this first release appeal to a wide audience and establish an image that is both recognisably unique and appealing to their target audience. With this in mind, their first release will be a cover version and will be used as a platfrom for future original releases. The record label is happy for this release to be any of the three songs listed below and would like you to choose whichever one you can make a dynamic promo for, as the key thing is to get them exposed!

Rough Trade

How did Rough Trade start?

Rough Trade started as a record shop on the 20th February in 1976 whilst in the middle of a bombing campaign in the UK. The shop was based at Kensington road.

Which music trends were popular?

Punk Rock had become a very popular trend with bands like The Clash, that were already signed to a major record company selling thousands.

What was the ethos of Rough Trade at this time?

Their etho was to just do it yourself attitude, as they were an independent record label.

How was Rough Trade different to large corporations?

When new bands join and they released a record they would print how much it cost to make the record, this was done so people knew how much it would cost.

What techniques were used to expand the independent music scene?

Rough Trade used to make a mail order to other shops that requested a bands record.

How did this lead to Rough Trade's expansion ?

By selling records nation wise and becoming an official label.

What type of business structure existed in the 1970's?
Principle before profit, they wanted to keep it very independent and not become like all the mainstream record companies.

Explain the successes of the distribution department and the record label?

In 1979 "Stiff Litte Fingers" were placed in the charts they had 100,000 copies sold very quickly. The was a big breakthrough for the company.Independent labels went through Rough Trade to distribute their records instead of going to the major companies to do so.

1980's

How did contracts effect the development of rough trade?

They made the contracts so that if one or either both sides of the party wanted to leave they could just do it. This lead to a big loss for Rough Trade as artists would leave once they decided to distribute with major companies.

What issue occurred between the record label and distribution?

Rough Trade struggled to keep to their rule of being different and independent record label by only selling music through the artists, it was becoming hard to try keep to the old ways while making the company large and more organised.

What changes did this lead to within the business structure of rough trade?

Once they had moved to another place where it was larger, they hired an account to see the how well the money would hold up, it turned out that the company was losing money fast.

What has been Rough Trade ideology and how was this effected?

Rough Trade's Ideology was to keep to their ways of Principle over money and not become like other major distribution companies.

Which artists led to success for Rough Trade?

'The Smiths' and 'Stiff Little Fingers'.

What music trend emerged at the end of the 1980's?

Indie music had become the new trend.

What differences were there at this time between Rough Trade and other independent music labels?

Rough Trade was still known as Independent.

1990's

What problems did Rough Trade incur at the start of the 1990's?

Rough Trade was going through financial problems.

What effect did this have on the Record label and distribution?

There were arguements between the label and distribution had become a big issue, the company were suffering with money which led to cuts.

How did major record labels branch out into the independent music scene?

Major companies started to create smaller companies .

What actions were taken to revive Rough Trade?

The company had started again in 1991 in a new office and looking for new artists that could be signed.

The 21st century.

How was Rough Trade envolved in the 21st century?

In 2001, Rough Trade decided to come back into the industry and signed up a new band, 'The Strokes'.
'The Strokes was the first step in putting Rough Trade's name back into the music industry once again.

How are their working practises different to the music produced through programmes such as X factor?

Rough Trade was know to go against the norm and be very independent, so when comparing the X Factor which is part of a huge record deal to Rough Trade it couldn't be more different. The working ways are different as X factor are about profit which Rough Trade has never been about since the start.

What successes have they had at this time?

Rough Trade have had the success of Duffy who was able to get Rough Trade's first number 1 chart hit.

How was Rough Trade's ideology developed for the company in the present day?

Rough Trade's ideology hasn't changed over the years it may have become more smaller but being an independent company it never really matters about developing bigger otherwise they would become like more major record deals.

Jay Z 99 problems

Jay Z 99 problems Analysis

1. Genre Characteristics

Urban setting Brooklyn, New Jersey Jay Z 'hood' - He makes a point of drawing our attention to this by revealing the name on his hoodie.
Representation of a 'gansta' lifestyle cruising in cars, dog fights, loitering on the streets, getting pulled over by the police.
Street dancing/Freestyle
Scantily- "Sexy" women - cheap looking in gold bikini.
Jail scenes- all inmates are black. Stereotypical race representations - white guy in the suit, policemen is white. Black people are jailbreak/on the streets.
Goes againest convention of representation of wealth- lacks fancy cars, clothes, bling and women etc.
Women are only a minor element in the video - usually hip hop videos would have more shots of sexy women.
Shooting at the end reflects the image of gansta cool.

2. Lyric and Visuals

From the hood Jay Z pulls down hood.
Radio - Image of a radio
Bitch - Image of a women
Fast Forward- moves his hand along to demonstrate.
Police bit showing the situation and becoming part of the narrative.
Overall images illustrate the lyrics sometimes very literally, sometimes in a more subtle way. showing all problems Jay Z has - video shows problems

3 Music and Visuals

Video is cut in time with the beat of the song.
Music is hard hitting, aggressive sounding with an emphasis or beat. The visuals are also hard looking and edits are fast paced to emphasis this aggression.

4. Close up /motifs/ Demands

Lots of shots of Jay Z not all close ups but there are some close ups of other men as well.
Shots of women are long shots/mid shots because they aren't important. Less emphasis on Jay Z on his own - he is an established artist and doesn't need as much exposure.
Jay Z puts his hand over the camera so that it seems as though the audience is looking through his fingers.
X - ray vision shot of money is car.
Scophillic treatment of women is quiet uncomfortable to watch- seemed unnecessary.
Early establishing shots are almost point of views, creating the impression that the audience is looking around the hood.
Video of Jay Z outside subway station.

6. Intertextual Reference

Possibly a video of him - referenceing himself. Very specific on who's in the video.

Tenacious D - Tribute

Genre Characteristics

Rock and Roll style but against the stereotype of rockstars.
The artists getting into trouble.
Live Performance.
Ripping their shirt from their chest.

Lyrics and Visuals

The visuals match with the lyrics.
The song is narrative, when taken into the flashback you see the encounter with the devil when he sings about it.
He uses his fingers when counting.
When the devil appears he mimes the part while Jack Black is singing.
The song explains how they made the song.

Music and Visuals

The devil playing the guitar and the music match.
When their is a high point of the song, Jack black becomes lit up from behind making it more dramatic, like in more serious music videos.
The music stops but the vocals can still be heard when there is a shot of the booth they are in but then comes back on when back in the booth.

Notion of Looking

When they are in the booth, the audience views them as if we are the screen into of them, we can establish that when the angles changes showing a screen in front of them.
Over the head shots are used when in the flashback with the devil and the two artists. High angle looking down onto the two below when the devil and low angle view when looking up at the devil, this could of been to show who has the higher status.

Intertextual Reference

Ben stiller makes a cameo appearance.
Dave Gorhl is the devil in the videos.
Cd promoted a the end.

Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics

There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals
There is a relationship between music and visuals (Contradict, illustrates, and amplifies)
The demand of record labels will include, the need for lots of close up shots of the artist and the artists may develop motifs which recur across their work
There is frequently reference to notion of looking and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body
There is often intertextual reference.
